Injuries initially misdiagnosed as sprained wrist (beware the sprained wrist).

چکیده
OBJECTIVES To describe the injuries misdiagnosed as a sprain of the wrist and to determine the approximate incidence of misdiagnosis in patients diagnosed as having a sprain of the wrist. METHODS All diagnostic errors in an accident and emergency (A&E) department were noted on a computerised database. Injuries initially misdiagnosed as wrist sprain are described and compared with the number of diagnoses of sprained wrist on the A&E department computer. RESULTS 57 injuries initially diagnosed as a sprained wrist had a different diagnosis (1.76% of all diagnoses of sprained wrists). This is an underestimate of the true incidence of diagnostic error. Forty two per cent of the misdiagnoses were of greenstick or torus fractures of the distal radius. CONCLUSIONS Training for junior doctors in A&E departments should be improved-especially training in radiological interpretation. Other methods of preventing diagnostic errors by misreading of radiographs, for example, more hot reporting of radiographs by radiologists or radiographers should be considered.

Beware the sprained wrist. The incidence and diagnosis of scapholunate instability.
A consecutive series of 100 cases of wrist injury, other than those referred with a radial fracture, have been reviewed to determine the incidence of acute scapholunate instability; a "clenched fist" radiograph was used in addition to the routine scaphoid views. Of 19 patients with an increase in the scapholunate gap, five were eventually considered to have significant scapholunate instability,...

a radiological department, such was my belief too; but it was not long before I had changed my views on the subject, and I hope that no apology is needed therefore for the publication on my part of a few notes on this interesting and common type of fracture. Our lack of knowledge on this subject is no doubt due to the fact that radiological examinations of ' sprained wrists' were very seldom do...

Fifty-three physiotherapists working at professional soccer clubs responded to a postal questionnaire on the treatment of sprained ankles. Elevation, the application of ice and compression bandaging were commonly recommended for the first 24-48 hours followed by early mobilisation. A variety of other physiotherapy techniques were used and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs commonly dispensed...
متن کاملA case of recurrent subluxation of the carpal scaphoid.
A man aged thirty-one years attended the London Hospital in June 1948, complaining that three months earlier he had “ sprained “ his right wrist while playing Rugby football. He was not sure of the exact nature of the injury and did not think much of it at the time. Later he noticed that forced palmar-flexion of the right wrist joint caused pain over the radial half of the dorsum of the joint a...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate uninjured and recurrent sprained ankles during single leg standing, both with and without visual input, and the contribution of related proprioceptive feedback in this event. METHODS A force measuring system was used for monitoring reaction forces in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions during single leg standing. Differences between selected variables obtaine...
